Following on from the study weekend in in 2017 in Lübeck, the Queen of the Hanse, this year the German Society is crossing the sea to study the Hanse from a different perspective. In the 13^th century, King’s Lynn was one of England’s foremost ports. The town attracted traders from the Hanseatic League who came to Lynn with fish, furs, timber, wax and pitch and took away English wool, cloth and salt. The port today still exports barley and imports timber.

All guided tours will be in English.

Programme

Friday 20 September

Optional: Attendees are more than welcome to start the weekend early with a self-guided excursion around the Sandringham Estate. A bus is available from King’s Lynn that goes to the visitor centre. The same bus will also take passengers to 19^th century resort town of Hunstanton.

7:00pm Networking dinner in the Hamburg Room of the Hanse House

Please note: attendees will be able to select a main course in advance from a reduced menu (approximately £15). Jadwiga will collect the money in advance as the restaurant would like the payment to be made as a group. Drinks and desserts can be paid for individually.

Saturday 21 September

Attendees will have the opportunity to take part in activities in the morning and the early afternoon, however the timing will depend on the tides.

Day time

True’s Yard – A visit to the last remaining fisherfolk yard and smokehouse in King’s Lynn

There is also an optional 60 minute tour on an authentic fishing smack. Those who wish to go on the river tour will be asked to donate a minimum of £10 each in cash on the day to the society that maintains the fishing smack.

King’s Lynn Hanseatic Trail – a walking tour around Lynn's Hanseatic heritage. The walk will start at the Custom House (Tourist Office) and last for approx. 90 minutes.

There will be a lunch break in between these activities (for approx.. 75 minutes) where attendees are free to choose where they would like to eat. Some suggestions:
