Chartered Institute
of Linguists

Foreign film night

Event report

The Midlands Network April get-together was a trip to the cinema. We met for a drink in the bar beforehand to get to know each other and welcome new members. As usual, the invitation was open to our members’ friends and family, and this time we were lucky enough to be joined by a five-month-old baby! We chatted about many things relating to work and travel, including chartered linguist status. Two people were working towards Chartership in other fields and everyone was enthusiastic about the prospect of chartered linguists achieving an equivalent level of prestige.

The film, “The Divine Order” was in Swiss German, which tested the comprehension skills of those of us who knew a little German. It was a warm-hearted and inspiring film that took us back to the 1970s through the music and clothes, not to mention its portrayal of the changing roles of women in European societies. This inspired us to Google which year women achieved the right to vote in our respective countries (Sweden came first!).
