Networks & events

CIOL members are at the heart of everything we do.

Our member networks are run by members, for members, and offer a unique opportunity for language practitioners to come together to network, share ideas, offer support and guidance, participate in professional development activities, share news and updates and to simply meet socially.

Freelance language practitioners typically work mostly in isolation so our divisions and societies offer members the chance to meet up with like-minded individuals, to share experiences, make friends and extend professional networks.

CIOL specialist divisions

All CIOL members, irrespective of grade, have the opportunity to join one (or more) of three specialist divisions, all managed by CIOL members on a voluntary basis:

Business, Professions and Government Division

The diversity of the Business, Professions and Government Division (BPG) Division is its strength as it welcomes all language practitioners working in industry, commerce, government and the professions (e.g. law, accountancy, engineering).

CIOL local societies

In addition, all CIOL members can meet with a member-run local society (or network) which offers social and professional development events for all linguists in a defined geographical location.

CIOL currently has local networks for linguists living or working in these locations:

CIOL events

We have a very busy events calendar including the annual CIOL Conference, which incorporates the renowned Threlford Lecture.

Supplemented by events and activities organised by our divisions and societies plus our CPD programme which includes webinars, there is bound to be something going on to suit your professional needs.
