11:00-12:00       'Video-mediated interpreting in legal proceedings’ with Sabine Braun

Sabine has recently worked on assessing the use of video-mediated interpreting in legal proceedings and in her session, she will discuss its uses and limitations. She will also cover strategies for managing the communication flow in video-mediated interpreting including effective turn-taking and avoidance of overlap. Her session is also aimed at providing guidance for legal interpreters working remotely with video conference equipment.  

12:00-13:00       ‘Remote Interpreting - Benefits and Challenges’ with Hayley Kreiger

Hayley’s session will look at the latest opportunities for remote simultaneous interpreting in the market. Based on recent experiences, Hayley will cover both the benefits of working remotely as well as the drawbacks and issues associated with this type of interpreting. She will address various technical platforms, plus provide tips to keep in mind when considering these projects and welcomes feedback from freelancers with experience in this field.

Speaker bios

Sabine Braun
Sabine Braun is a Professor of Translation Studies and Director of the Centre for Translation Studies at the University of Surrey and Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on technology-assisted methods, modalities and socio-technological practices of translation and interpreting, especially video-mediated interpreting (VMI).

In addition to leading several multinational European projects in this field, Prof. Braun has worked closely with the European Council Working Party on e-Law (e-Justice) to develop guidelines for video-mediated interpreting in legal proceedings and she has advised the Metropolitan Police Service in London and the London Probation Trust on the introduction of remote interpreting.

Hayley Kreiger
Hayley holds a B.A. in French and Spanish Language and Literature having studied languages in the U.S.  She then moved into project management and has worked on the operation side of interpretation events since 2010, both in NYC and London.  As Head of Production for Ubiqus’ Interpretation and Live Events Division, she oversees a team of project managers, technicians and freelance interpreters responsible for over 1,500 yearly meetings, conferences and events.  These involve simultaneous, consecutive or remote interpretation services required by corporate, government and public organisations across the U.K. and Europe.  She also acts as the UK representative for the CRN, a worldwide network of companies specialising in conferencing and simultaneous interpretation solutions through the utilisation of Bosch Congress Equipment.
