Vera Birkenbihl was a German bestselling author and creator of the Birkenbihl Language Learning Method. She developed a “brain-friendly” and creative learning method that became very popular in the 80’s, especially because she distanced herself from conventional learning methods and avoided any kind of drilling in vocabulary.
The method consists of four steps:
- Decoding the source text, which consists of translating the text word for word whilst keeping the original syntaxis of the foreign language.
- Active listening of the source text while actively reading the word for word translation.
- Passive listening of the source text in the background while carrying out daily activities
- Speaking, reading and writing
