Book Club: discussion of “The Years” by Annie Ernaux

Join us for an online discussion of the “The Years” by Annie Ernaux.

Annie Ernaux was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in October for “the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory”.

She is the first female French writer to win the coveted prize.

Describing herself as the “ethnographer of my own life”, Ernaux has long been celebrated in France for her honest and powerful writing of historic and personal experience, combining autobiographical details with a wider look at French society.

“The Years”, translated by Alison L. Strayer, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2019 and was awarded the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation in the same year.

Participants are invited to read the book in English (and in the French original if they are interested in doing so & time permitting) and join us to discuss the novel and the life of the author.
