The Interpreting Division Steering Group is organising a series of online “clinic” drop-in sessions for interpreters, especially for (but not limited to) those early on in their career. These are informal online meetings where attendees can ask our experienced panel members questions and ask for advice on a specific topic.
You still need to book in advance as the number of attendees we can host is limited to 100 places. Please find below more information on the upcoming drop-in session and the specific topic we will be covering.
Drop-in session: Collaborative Approach in Medical Interpreting Provision
Join us for an insightful online event on interpreting services in the medical sector. Our guest speakers include Dr. Kiki Sonidou, Mrs. Voula Beletsioti (Manager of a Nursing Home and Senior Nurse), Interpreter Trainer Bayan Abughaida, and CIOL ID members and experienced interpreters Eleni Markou, Diana Singureanu and Sue Leschen. This event will tackle the key challenges and requirements for providing effective communication support to patients and residents with limited English proficiency.
Key Topics:
1. Demand for Interpreting Services: Find out from medical practitioners which languages are most in demand and how these trends evolve over time and the process of booking interpreters.
2. Quality of Interpreting Services: Issues with interpreting quality and understand how they were addressed by both medical practitioners and interpreting trainers; the importance of working with qualified interpreters specialised in medical interpreting.
3. Ethical and cultural considerations in working with interpreters and how they can assist or hinder in navigating these complexities.
4. Institutional Guidelines: the need for these and what they should include.
5. Interpreter training: core training areas for effectively preparing medical interpreters for the demands of the job; availability and convenience of the training, including time commitment and cost considerations.
